Start your new job like a Boss! (AKA be an awesome employee)

Starting a new job can be a roller coaster of emotions.  You are extremely excited that you landed the position, but you are also nervous.  You want to make sure that you not only do a great job, but that you fit in with the team and gain their respect.  Here are some tips to make sure your first few weeks on the job go great!

Understand your job requirements

This may be a no-brainer, but understanding your job responsibilities should be your number one priority.  Talk with your Manager and get an idea of their expectations.  They may lay out a 60 or 90 day plan which can be very helpful.  Make sure that you are doing exactly what they need you to do and if you have any questions don’t be afraid to ask!

Observe

One of the best ways to adapt to a new company is to simply observe and people watch a bit.  See how others interact and see how they get their job done.  Shadow your Manager and make sure that you are doing things according to the company standards and culture.

Socialize with co-workers, but don’t overdo it

Be friendly and open to conversations.  One of the best ways to fit into a new company is to be an active member of your team.  Do your best to engage in conversation and make sure that you remember names!

Know the key players

This one piggy backs off of socializing, but it falls into it’s own category.  Make sure that you do your research and that you are aware of key leadership in case you cross paths.  You don’t want to accidentally ignore the president or CEO!

Ask questions

It may sound silly, but this is something that many people don’t do when they take a new position.  They are afraid that they may look like they don’t know what they are doing or come off as inexperienced.  Asking questions is the best way to ensure you are on the right track and that you are meeting your Manager’s expectations.

Ask for feedback

Make it a point to check in with your Supervisor and ask them for feedback.  I recommend after your first week, second week, and then after your first 30 days.  This will show your Manager that you are serious about your role and it will also give you some peace to know you are on the right track.

Arrive early and stay late

This is very important especially right when you start.  Be prepared to get their early and stay late until you get a sense of how the office works.  Even if 5 o’clock rolls around and everyone runs for the exits, make it a point to stay a little later.  Show your boss that you are dedicated, serious, and are excited about the opportunity.

No Distractions

Don’t pull out your cell phone and start texting or bring up a web browser on your computer and start surfing.  Even if you see others in the office doing it, give yourself some time to settle in to the office and get a feel for your surroundings.  It is important to be focused and make a great impression.

Conclusion

While the first few weeks of any new role may be a challenge, you can definitely set yourself up for success.  Put your best foot forward and you should be in good shape!  If you have a question don’t hesitate to ask.  Try your best to be outgoing from the minute you step foot in the door and be friendly.  Finally, enjoy.  You worked so hard to land a new job so be proud of yourself and take it in!
